Play a tournament

A tournament is a round robin: you and three to seven opponents, each playing each other once. You play your own games; the others play theirs on your device while you wait, and every one of them can be watched or replayed.

Where it is

On Practise, the Play against the engine card has New game. At the top of that screen choose Tournament instead of You play. Under Your tournaments are the ones you have made, each with its number of players, its time control and how far it has got; a tap opens one. Delete on its card removes it, after you confirm.

Setting one up

New tournament shows the same list of opponents as a game of your own: tap three to seven of them, and each tapped one is listed under Players, where its × takes it off again. Engine levels and human-like opponents can be mixed. Maximum is not offered: it thinks on its own clock and cannot play the other games fast.

Name starts as „Tournament" and today's date, which you can change. Time is one time control for the whole tournament, and there is no Untimed: the other games need a clock. With Rated where it can be on, your game counts toward your rating when the opponent is an engine level or an opponent measured at that speed, and has no take back; the others do not count. Off, none of your games count and you may take moves back. Without an account no game is rated. Start tournament draws the pairings and opens it; Cancel goes back to the list.

Playing your games

Each round lists your game first. Play your game (Play on a phone) opens an ordinary game against that opponent, on the same screen and with the same rules as a game of your own, and its result — a resignation or a flag included — is the tournament's. It is recorded like any other game, so it is kept with My games as well. When it is over, Open in Analysis on its card opens it there.

With an odd number of players one player rests each round and scores nothing; the round says who.

The other games

The opponents' games against each other are played on this device, fast, and never while you are in your own game. They are played only while the tournament is open: leave it and they wait until you open it again. A game cut short is played again from its start. A game being played has Watch, which follows it move by move (Following a game); a finished one has Replay, which plays it back with Play and Pause at Real pace or Fast. If the games in the background stop, the round says so, with Try again. Rounds already played are under Earlier rounds.

Standings

On a window the standings and the crosstable are on the left and the round on the right; on a phone they are three tabs, Standings, Crosstable and the round. Players are placed by points, then by Sonneborn-Berger (the SB column), then by the games among the tied players if each of them has played every other, then by the number of wins; after that the place is shared and written „=6". When the last game is over, Tournament finished gives your place and your performance. The performance counts only your games against human-like opponents measured at the tournament's speed; with none, or with a score of nothing or everything, it says there is none.

Where it is kept

A tournament is kept on this device for your account, and is removed when you sign out; your own games are on the server as well, in My games. On a tournament's screen, More holds Delete. A tournament that cannot be read back — written by another version of the app, or damaged — stays in the list and says so, rather than disappearing.

Two opponents of your choosing can also play one game while you watch: watch a game. The rest of the Practise tab is on practise on your own.
